Gua Sha is a healing technique of East Asian Medicine. It is sometimes called coining, scraping, or spooning. Gua Sha is performed by scraping the surface of the skin with a smooth-edged instrument of choice. Pain, whether chronic or acute, is the most common reason for using Gua Sha. The principle behind Gua Sha is that this technique has the ability to break up stagnation and increase microcirculation to the soft tissue, stimulating the body's natural pain relieving opioid response. In addition to relieving pain it can also assist in treating asthma, colds, flu, fever, heatstroke, fibromyalgia, strains, sprains and muscle spasms.
